Cheryl R. Walls commented on Cheryl R. Walls's blog post Who I am!
"Thanks, Sue. I have had to do alot of soul searching on this subject. It is very difficult to encourage this in our volunteers if I don't practice this myself. I think that's why God gave me a second chance at hospice after a six month break. I am…"

Sue Fink commented on Cheryl R. Walls's blog post Who I am!
"Hang in there, Cheryl. You need to read up a bit on keeping emotional boundaries between you and volunteers or clients/families to prevent you from burning out. It is a balancing act--our compassion for others has probably attracted us to this job,…"

Cheryl R. Walls left a comment on Nursing
"Sorry, when I made my personal page, I thought I had joined the nursing section. Maybe I had a "DUH" moment. I have participated in Hospice nursing for almost four years now and have seen the Highs and the Lows of it. I was lucky enough to leave the…"

Cheryl R. Walls replied to Kris Scanlon's discussion Nonverbal patients
"When I would have to make nursing visits on our non-verbal patients, I would do my nursing assessment, then I would sing to them, I would talk to them, read my Bible to them, make sure the TV station was on a channel I thought THEY would appreciate,…"

Cheryl R. Walls replied to Frances Shani Parker's discussion Spirit Sightings: What causes this mysterious phenomenon? (Video: 3:47 mins.)
"You can come at this from several different perspectives. The medical approach says due to decrease in activity and metabolism, the brain begins to hallucinate. Also, the spiritual aspect say's that a loving God sends "messengers" to help you be…"

Cheryl R. Walls commented on Cheryl R. Walls's blog post Who I am!
"Greg,
Thank you so much! I have an awesome Director who stands beside me on these types of decisions. And I agree, her parting attitude does show exactly how un-ready she was (if that is a word). But to be validated in what I do and how I go about…"

Greg Schneider commented on Cheryl R. Walls's blog post Who I am!
"Hi Cheryl,

I empathize with you...it saddens me when I feel that others are angry with me when I have had to make a decision or take an action that they disagree with. As a volunteer coordinator your first priority is the patient and their family.…"

"How do you handle having a volunteer who appears to be for all intents and purposes, excited about volunteering but does not return phone calls and misses appointments to meet new patients and their families? Being a manager for only eight months,…"

  • Cheryl - I notice you are in quite a few spots on here. I also noticed most comments are quite aged. Are you still with your Hospice? gplace@cccinc.net
  • Cheryl - I struggle with some of the same challenges recruiting volunteers from smaller communities. Our office is based in Lincoln, NE, which has a 225,000+ population, but we also need volunteers in SEVERAL smaller communities where the population begins around 500.

Nearly all of our volunteers in these smaller communities have been referred to me because of "somebody who knows somebody!"

Those who companion suffering daily, such as hospice nurses and volunteers, will surely appreciate this beautiful work. With 62 original art collages by Rashani Réa, five beautiful chapters by Kathy Douglas, and a foreword by Jean Watson, this exquisite book is a peaceful refuge for contemplation, inquiry, reflection and inspiration for those who traverse the joys and sorrows of nursing.

Kathy Douglas, RN, MPH-HA is a nationally recognized nurse leader, filmmaker and entrepreneur.

Rashani Réa is a prolific artist and musician, a creatrice of sanctuaries and a respected spiritual mentor.

“This is a beloved book and beyond a book. It is an evocative, poetic, ecstatic, and inspirited sacred, experiential calling. A calling to you--YES, YOU.”

— Jean Watson, PhD, RN, AHN-BC, FAAN, Living Legend (AAN)

“Those who companion suffering daily need to turn inward to metabolize what they have witnessed. This exquisite book, filled with beautiful images and poetic wise words, is the inspiration and support needed to grow a wise heart.”

— Frank Ostaseski, founder and director of the Metta Institute and author of The Five Invitations: Discovering What Death Can Teach Us About Living Fully

“In this unique time of the COVID-19 pandemic, this book should be considered a tribute to the tremendous courage being displayed by nurses around the world. There is much wisdom conveyed throughout by those who have been there serving others with such grace.”
