Hi Sue,
Great question...I would start out by having your volunteers tell the family caregiver that they have been trained to support them until their loved one dies and beyond if they choose to have you support them during the bereavement period. Doing this up front not only creates confidence in the volunteer and the family caregiver but also lets the caregiver know that the hospice team is committed to walking the journey with them the entire way. This also implies that the volunteer knows the way and has been trained in all aspects of the journey.
