Wow, 20 hours is serious! Topics that my volunteers voted on after the core training were: Self Care and De-stressing; Spirituality; The Grieving Process; Volunteering with Young Patients; Time Management... You can make it more exciting by having guest speakers. For example: for the self care in-service have a half hour on staying physically fit and have a nutritionist speak, half hour on meditation techniques and have a yoga or Zen teacher speak, ... You can also have an in-service on the various members of the Hospice team - Get an RN or two to tell about how they got into Hospice and what they do.
Let us know what you do!
I agree 20 hours is alot. Is this your company's policy??? I generally offer 4 in-services (continous education) a year. My company's policy states that HIPPA and Infectious control is covered every year so I only have to do 2 additional, but even for staff these in-services only take a hour. If 20 hours is your policy I would visit with QUPA person or DON for suggestions on in-services that would be appropriate for volunteers. Another question, is 20 hours for direct patient care volunteers only or also adminisrative.
