Tuck-in Program

I was looking to incorporate a tuck-in program into our services, but have found some resistance from our RN case managers. They are finding that this would be a dupliation of their services and potentially intrusive to families.  Many of the weekend calls almost always tend to be for events that could not be predicted.  Any suggestions? I certainly do not want to re-invent the wheel or make a problem where there is not one, but I do want to make weekends event free for staff, families, and patients.

  • Hi Michele,

Our HVA members who use our Patient Data Vault (PDV) service implement Tuck-in programs that are very successful.  Tuck-in programs are a key element to a successful volunteer program.  If you are interested in learning more, I can connect you with volunteer coordinators that can help you.

  • We at Home Hospice in Odessa Texas, have started the Tuck in program. My nurses loved it. IT helps the oncall weekend nurse not to have to deliver any supplies or refills, that should have been taken care of during the week. Also It gives the family another person for support to talk with. That will also go towards your 5%. We made our own template to go with our patients needs. Tuck in is a great program. Changes is hard for some. Hope it goes well for you. Carolyn Lujan, LVN, Volunteer Coordinator

  • Hi Michele,

I've uploaded a copy of our Hospice Volunteer News magazine from 2009, which talks about a successful Tuck In program.  See the article on page 3:

Successful Volunteer “Tuck- in” Program Prepares Patients for the Weekend

You can contact Sandra Huster if it would be of help to you.  Her email address is at the end of the article.

    Hope this is helpful.

“This is a beloved book and beyond a book. It is an evocative, poetic, ecstatic, and inspirited sacred, experiential calling. A calling to you--YES, YOU.”

— Jean Watson, PhD, RN, AHN-BC, FAAN, Living Legend (AAN)

“Those who companion suffering daily need to turn inward to metabolize what they have witnessed. This exquisite book, filled with beautiful images and poetic wise words, is the inspiration and support needed to grow a wise heart.”

“In this unique time of the COVID-19 pandemic, this book should be considered a tribute to the tremendous courage being displayed by nurses around the world. There is much wisdom conveyed throughout by those who have been there serving others with such grace.”
