The Oscar nominated prison hospice documentary to air on HBO Documentary Channel, next Monday, 3/31/14.

Prison Terminal: The Last Days of Private Jack Hall is a moving cinema verité documentary that breaks through the walls of one of Americas oldest maximum security prisons to tell the story of the final months in the life of a terminally ill prisoner, Jack Hall and the hospice volunteers, they themselves prisoners, who care for him.

The film draws from footage shot over a six-month period behind the walls of the Iowa State Penitentiary and provides a fascinating and often poignant account of how the hospice experience can profoundly touch even the forsaken lives of the incarcerated.

  • I encourage everybody to watch this documentary. We were lucky enough to have Edgar Barens in town at Creighton University and he spoke along with a panel after the viewing and answered questions.  He is certainly passionate about his work. He said he is going on a tour - 50 prisons in 100 days promoting prison hospices and plans to blog about it.  Keep checking his website for updated information.  He said there are 1200 penitentiaries in the country and only 70 have hospice programs. A lot of work yet to be done!

  • Newsweek wrote an article about the documentary, which aired yesterday.  Here is the link:

  • Many thanks to HCF Member Edgar Barens for his Oscar nominated prison hospice documentary that aired yesterday on HBO Documentary Channel.

Congratulations on such a great contribution to hospice community.  It is with deep gratitude that I thank those who served Jack, those that created the hospice rooms and you and your crew for allowing Jack to die with such dignity and grace.  Such acts of kindness by humanity are treasured by us all.
