  • What a great resource, I just forwarded this info to one of my volunteers.  Also the video with Naomi and Gladys Wilson is amazingly powerful.  I'm going to figure a way to pull some of this into my new volunteer training .... and do an in-service too.  Thank you for posting Metta!

    • Thanks so much for your feedback, Ruth.  I'm delighted if this info will provide value to you and your hospice volunteers.

Learning about the Validation Method and working with Naomi has been a life-changing experience for me and for many others -- and I will look forward to any additional updates you might be willing to share as you begin to incorporate the Validation Method into your training and in-service programs.

      With grateful appreciation and interest,

      Metta

      P.S.

If there is any chance you could bring Naomi into your community to do a LIVE training session with her, I would highly recommend it!  She is an amazingly engaging and delightfully entertaining presenter (she confesses to wanting to be an actress when she was younger), and the content/training would be relevant for anyone involved in elder care: hospices, nursing homes, churches, home health facilities, etc. (For example, the session I attended drew over 200 people in a very small town in Texas!)

And, although she is terrifically vital and dynamic for anyone 30 years younger, she is now over 80 years old herself, so it would be a rare and wonderful opportunity to take advantage of her expertise and contagious energy while she is still able and willing to travel.

  • Thanks for the info Metta.  I posted the Interview in our videos section. Her description very much fits with the work that hospice volunteers do every day.

    • Great!  Thanks for giving Naomi's work additional visibility here, Greg.

Naomi's skills and empathetic insight are extraordinary -- and it was a real honor to work with her in her recent "Validation Method" training session.

I also agree with you completely about the applicability of Naomi's work to hospice volunteering, and I would highly recommend her training to anyone interested in deepening their ability to connect both with hospice clients and with the family members of hospice clients.

In fact, since Naomi's methodology is based on the humanistic psychology and "self-actualization" model of Carl Rogers, it has profound implications for each of us in terms of our ability to provide "unconditional regard" and "validation" to everyone with whom we come into contact.  As such, her training is a great resource for anyone interested in creating deeper, more meaningful relationships with others.

  • Naomi Feil is an incredible teacher in this regard.  There are a number of amazing videos on her website including one specifically designed for inservice training.

FYI, I was introduced to Naomi's work through Hope Hospice in New Braunfels, Texas, where Naomi will be conducting a full day of training tomorrow.

  • Hello MJ, I just saw your question as I have been away from this website for awhile.  Peege is a wonderful DVD you can purchase on Amazon.com.  I recently purchased it for our hospice volunteers program.  I had used this back in the 1980's when I was running a hospice volunteer program in Southern California.  It was one of my favorite training films.  Although it is an oldie, the message is still strong and moving. This video touches your heart as it describes a family dealing with a loved one who is in a nursing home. I've always remembered the message of the film when working with elderly- that even if they can't speak or communicate clearly, we should always assume that they know- at some level- we are there & they have memories.  You can view more if you search the web for film Peege. http://www.phoenixlearninggroup.com/Products/VideoDetail.aspx?id=91...  "Peege" was one of 25 films added on Dec. 27, 2007, to the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress, which recognized this renowned production as "extremely moving."

  • The Alzheimer's Association has some very reasonably priced resources in their store at:

The above is a link to a notebook they publish on caregiving but this page also references a CD and DVD that may be useful.
