What Does Hospice Have to Do With Red Hats?

Some hospice patients are still energetic enough to join other nursing home residents in a Red Hat Society group. Terminally ill patients often maintain their sense of humor. Being part of an invigorating group is an excellent way to uplift spirits and contribute positively to the culture in nursing homes. For those of you who are not familiar with the Red Hat Society, it consists of worldwide chapters of women celebrating their half-century rite of passage into middle-aged freedom. They are officially committed to being carefree and fun loving while wearing their red hats and purple outfits. They feel they have earned it. At one nursing home where I served as a hospice volunteer, I couldn’t help but smile when I saw how happy all the ladies looked when they met monthly to enjoy various activities like tea parties and Red Hat bingo with Red Hat prizes. They improved their quality of life and proudly wore their red hats with “hatitude.” Hat wearers, you know what I’m talking about.
